Real patriotism is a willingness to challenge the government when it’s wrong.

I must study Politicks and War that my sons may have liberty to study Painting and Poetry Mathematicks and Philosophy. My sons ought to study Mathematicks and Philosophy, Geography, natural History, Naval Architecture, navigation, Commerce and Agriculture, in order to give their Children a right to study Painting, Poetry, Musick, Architecture, Statuary, Tapestry and Porcelaine.

A written text is therefore not an information repository, nor is it a naturally-occurring flow of words and sentences; it is an artefact created for a reader. The aim is not simply to make it possible for the reader to understand; the narrative should be strong enough to make it impossible for the reader NOT to understand.
